A night in the Jaisalmer desert
Camel safari into the Thar Desert and one night under the stars at a camp near the Sam sand dunes. The Milky Way is visible in a way it simply is not from Britain.
Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
Consistently the best fort in India, and the views over the Blue City from its ramparts at dusk are the reason to time the visit for late afternoon.
Lake Pichola, Udaipur
The most romantic city in India. The City Palace, Jagdish Temple, and a rooftop dinner overlooking the lake at dusk.
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, not sunset
Most visitors go at sunset. Go at sunrise instead. The gates open around 5:30am in summer or 6:00am in winter, the crowds are a fraction of the afternoon's, and for about twenty minutes the white marble takes on a soft rose gold glow that sunset's warmer, busier light does not quite match.
Dharavi, Mumbai, with a proper guide
Not a poverty tour. An economic and human tour of a neighbourhood that manufactures a genuinely enormous share of India's exported goods.
Jaipur's block printing workshops and gem bazaar
Amber Fort, City Palace and Hawa Mahal in the morning. Hands on block printing ateliers and a gem bazaar in the afternoon. The Rajasthani textile tradition here is real and buyable, not staged.

Mumbai
✈Arrive at Mumbai (BOM)
The Gateway of India and a walk through Colaba's Art Deco streets, an evening at Marine Drive as the city's lights come on, and Dharavi with a proper guide the following morning.
Insider tip: This is Mumbai's actual engine room, not its postcard.

Udaipur
✈Fly Mumbai to Udaipur, about 1.5 hours
The City Palace complex and Jagdish Temple, a wander through lakeside artisan alleys, and a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola followed by a rooftop dinner over the water.
Insider tip: Udaipur is renowned for fine miniature painting on silk and marble.

Jodhpur
🚗Drive to Jodhpur, about 5 to 6 hours through the Rajasthan countryside
Mehrangarh Fort in the morning, consistently the best fort in India, then Jaswant Thada and a walk through the Blue City lanes, timed so the fort ramparts are reached again at dusk.
Insider tip: The fort's audio tour, narrated by the Maharaja's family, is genuinely outstanding.

Jaisalmer
🚗Drive deeper into the Thar Desert, about 5 to 6 hours
Jaisalmer Fort, still a living fort with families residing inside, and Patwon ki Haveli's carved facades, followed by a camel safari to the Sam sand dunes and one night under the stars at a desert camp with dinner and folk music.
Insider tip: This is the single most requested memory from this route. Worth protecting the pacing around it.

Jaipur
✈Fly Jaisalmer to Jaipur, recommended over the roughly 570km road transfer
Amber Fort, City Palace and a Hawa Mahal photo stop in the morning. Block printing workshops and the gem bazaar in the afternoon, finishing with a Rajasthani dal baati churma feast.
Insider tip: Flying saves almost a full day of driving.

Agra
🚆Drive or train to Agra, about 4 to 5 hours
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, before the crowds, followed by an afternoon at Agra Fort. This is the moment the whole route has been building toward. Worth the early alarm.
Insider tip: Sleep early the night before. The gates open around 5:30am in summer, 6:00am in winter.

Delhi and departure
🚆Drive or train to Delhi, about 2 to 4 hours, then transfer to Delhi Airport (DEL)
A free afternoon in Delhi for last minute exploration or rest, a farewell dinner, then the onward departure flight.

The Jaisalmer to Jodhpur leg is a long overland drive, around 5 hours. Flying Jaisalmer to Jaipur is worth it to avoid losing most of a day on the roughly 570km road transfer. The desert camp night has no reliable wifi or air conditioning by design, worth setting that expectation at booking.
