Howrah Bridge at 5am
The city waking up underneath the steel truss on the Hooghly River. Flower markets, tens of thousands of early workers, and mist under the bridge. This is the correct hour to see it.
The Darjeeling toy train through the tea estates
A UNESCO World Heritage narrow gauge railway, and genuinely one of the most beautiful slow journeys on earth.
Tiger Hill sunrise over Kangchenjunga
The third highest peak on earth, flushed gold at first light. Not guaranteed on a misty morning, which somehow makes it better when it happens.
Rumtek Monastery, Sikkim
One of the most significant Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet. Morning prayers and butter lamp lighting.
The living root bridges of Meghalaya
Suspension bridges naturally grown from the roots of living rubber trees over decades, some over centuries. Photographs of them look digitally enhanced. They are not.
The Dawki River's clear water
Water clear enough to see the riverbed from a boat. Wooden boats appear to float suspended in thin air.

Kolkata

Howrah Bridge at 5am on the Hooghly River, then the College Street book district and Kumartuli potters' quarter, followed by the Victoria Memorial and a Park Street evening.

Darjeeling
🚆Fly to Bagdogra, then drive up into the hills, 3 to 4 hours total
A pre dawn drive to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kangchenjunga, the Darjeeling toy train through the tea estates, and a first flush tea tasting at a working estate.
Insider tip: Sunrise over Kangchenjunga is not guaranteed on foggy mornings. It is better when it is clear.

Gangtok
🚗Drive to Sikkim, about 4 to 5 hours
Rumtek Monastery in the morning, an afternoon walk along MG Marg, and, where currently accessible with the appropriate permit, an optional day trip toward Tsomgo Lake.
Insider tip: Sikkim is plastic bottle free. Carry a reusable flask.

Shillong
🚗Full transit day via Guwahati, about 8 hours
The living root bridges near Cherrapunji, the clear waters of the Dawki River, and a visit to Mawlynnong, reportedly the cleanest village in Asia, though it is closed to day trippers on Sundays.
Insider tip: No Bollywood reference points, no preconceptions. This is the differentiator of the whole route.

Budget and Premium follow the same route. The difference is accommodation quality and service level. The temples, backwaters, desert and mountains are the same either way. Land-only, per person, based on a shared double or twin room.
Heritage connection
Kolkata on the East trip hits differently if you have Bengali heritage. College Street, the intellectual cafés, and Durga Puja if you time it right. The city that produced Tagore and Ray isn't just history, it still feels like a living version of that culture.More on Bengali heritage
Good to know
This is the least visited region in the collection. Mobile signal and amenities are noticeably sparser than the other routes. Sikkim requires an Inner Line Permit and, for parts of North Sikkim, a Protected Area Permit. Since January 2026 these are processed entirely online through India's e-FRRO system rather than issued on paper, and peak season processing can take one to three weeks, so we start the application well ahead of travel. Foreign passport holders currently cannot visit Nathu La Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, or the Zuluk circuit, and cannot travel solo in North Sikkim. The Gangtok to Shillong leg is a full transit day by design, routed via Guwahati, worth setting that expectation rather than letting it feel like a wasted day. The northeast monsoon, June to September, is intense. The Sohra to Mawsynram ridge around Cherrapunji is among the wettest places on Earth, with Mawsynram now holding the official record for highest average annual rainfall.
